How do I classify trips?

A trip represents your time on the road with the HiRoad app. In order to measure your good driving habits and calculate your potential monthly discount, you’re required to classify each trip as driving or not driving.

Your driving score for each trip is based on a combination of factors representing usage and circumstances.

Classify a trip as driving when:
• You’re driving a car (listed on your HiRoad policy) for commuting, running errands or taking a road trip
• You’re driving a rental car on vacation or when your vehicle is being repaired (for up to 30 days and depending on your coverage)

• You’re driving a friend’s car
• You’re driving for business (but not for commercial use). Examples include: taking a client to see a house (if you’re a realtor) or driving to a restaurant (for a sales meeting).
• Any additional drivers are listed on your policy; they also need to use the app and classify trips (required)

Classify a trip as not driving when:
• You’re a passenger in your car (remember to have all regular drivers of your car also listed on your policy use the HiRoad app)
• You’re a passenger in someone else’s car, including a ridesharing vehicle such as Uber or Lyft
• You’re driving for a ridesharing company—whether you're waiting to connect with a new ride, on the way to pick up or carrying a passenger
• You’re taking public transportation (bus, train, subway, tram, taxi, light rail, ferry, etc.)
• You’re riding a bicycle, scooter, hoverboard, skateboard, etc.
